Rommel--what more can you say!
This is a great series about a great general, BUT WATCH IT IN REVERSE ORDER. I WILL SAY IT AGAIN. WATCH THIS SERIES IN REVERSE ORDER--3-2-1, not 1-2-3. I do not know why they have it reversed but they do. It is not Amazon's fault.
Rommel was a great general and this series shows more of the man than any series that I have seen before. Only in one assertion was I surprised, they say that Rommel had joined the anti Hitler conspirators at least to the extent of planing to surrender in the WEST. I have not seen this assertion in any of the several biographies that I have read. I am not saying that the assertion is wrong because as time goes on more material becomes available and theories change, but I am saying that this assertion is different from what I have read in the past about Rommel's participation. It does make more sense however given Rommel's end.
If you know a lot about General Rommel or if you know nothing you will enjoy this series and you will...
Well done. Rommel shows us not to pre-judge all ww2 germans.
This was very well done. I have also read a few books on Rommel and this series was very well done. I agree with the last guy, see it in reverse order : 3, 2, 1.
Even if you're not really into getting knowledge on WW2 German Generals, you might find yourself quite pleased with this series. You get to see Rommel as a Human Being. Not many of the highest ranking German officers ended up acting against Hitlers direct orders as did Rommel, and yet, Rommel did so repeatedly...eventually incurring his own death by forced ingestion of cyanide by Hitlers SS. All of the Allied forces had great respect for Rommel, and saw him as a man of Noble character and uncommon valor, courage, and bravery. Rommel was a general akin to the best of Ancient Rome, where, unlike today, a general actually LEAD his forces into battle, whereas, by comparison, today's generals can't be found ANYWHERE NEAR the front lines...as they sit sometimes 100's of miles away in an air conditioned trailer with...
Man and Myth [episodes are in reverse order]
The series: Interesting interviews (some contradictory) and original footage. An accurate description of his conduct as a soldier with included personal touches. Episode 1 is an overview but the episodes, for continuity, are reversed. Episode 3 is actually the beginning. Who was this man and what did he know? What was his true convection? This series was not intended as an in depth study. Other than the reversed order of episodes, it is well narrated and presented. Rommel enjoyed publicity but he wasn't a politician nor did he have knowledge of the genocide until later in the war. Within the conspiracies, Rommel chose to remain true (not without question) to Hitler.
Recommended for beginners and those who want a simple overview. How many viewers will realize that Rommel was ordered to commit suicide with cyanide? Worth watching.
