American Dad! Volume Eight

American Dad Volume 8
Volume 8 contains the 18 episodes from 8th season of American Dad!

List

1. Hot Water
2. Hurricane
3. A Ward Show
4. The Worst Stan
5. Virtual In-Stanity
6. The Scarlett Getter
7. Season's Beatings
8. The Unbrave One
9. Stanny Tendergrass
10. Wheels & the Legman and the Case of Grandpa's Key
11. Old Stan in The Mountain
12. The Wrestler
13. Dr. Klaustus
14. Stan's Best Friend
15. Less Money, Mo' Problems
16. The Kidney Stays in the Picture
17. Ricky Spanish
18. Toy Whorey

I don't think this is the best volume of American Dad but there are still some good episodes on here. The season starts off with Stan becoming addicted to a sinister Hot Tub and at the end of the episode he actually dies. Interesting episode, not bad just interesting. The Scarlett Getter features a woman Stan was attracted to before meeting Francine, but it turns out that she is just using Stan because...

Not the best volumn but still better than Family Guy
We have been fans of American Dad for a long time and have all the volumes on DVD. This season held up to the unique sense of humor that is American Dad. However I do feel that show has declined slightly since seasons past. If you are an American Dad fan it is worth purchasing to complete your collection. Even though the show has declined slightly it is still a thousand times better than Family Guy which is so awful and has only gotten more and more ridiculous over the years. I just hope that how this volume of American Dad was isn't a glimps of it following the same path as Family Guy.

American Dad! Vol. 8
Honestly , this volume is probably one of the worst-best. Meaning , that its half good , half bad. The front artwork shows characters from ''Hot Tub'' , ''The Worst Stan'' ''Seasons Beatings'' ''Old Stan in the Mountain'' ''Stan's Best Friend'' and ''Toy Whorey''. The color theme for this is red and its mainly based on Hot Tub. The back is a photo from the song ''Daddy's Gone'' with Steve and Roger. The inside on the left is the Hot Tub , with the episodes on the right. You can't see the episode list that much unless you take it out. The Discs have Stan and Francine (1) , Roger (2) , and Hayley , Steve , and Klaus (3). There is only three commentaries and many deleted scenes and a Twerking ''Stan's Booty Dance'' featurette. This set sucks alot but you get very amazing episodes and the complete 18 episode Season 8. I recommend getting this. Very nice!

Family Guy, Volume Nine

I kinda feel cheated......
I've been a fan since January 31, 1999.. Bought every DVD including the random DVD's they release so Seth MacFarlane could make some extra cash (like he needs it). But now I'm starting to get a little upset with these half season DVD releases.. I really feel scammed. I almost feel like not buying anymore. Between netflix, hulu, and amazon prime I'm starting to realize that people like Seth MacFarlane cant hold my arm behind my back in order to have their shows on demand.. Let alone the fact that family guy has kinda gone downhill the past 3 years... Maybe a handful (2-3) are memorable. Lets take a stand and maybe they will go back to trying to make us happy instead of filling their pockets :)

About time...but what's with the wait?
I hate to add to the rest of the comments complaining about the release date fiasco (reviews are only supposed to be for people that actually purchased the item), but I did a quick look online and found that all of season 8 and the first couple of season 9 have already been released in other markets (as Volume 10) and the rest of season 9 has been released (after checking amazon.co.uk) as 'Volume 11'. What gives with the giant wait? In the same amount of time between Volume 8 and Volume 9's release in the US, region 2 got the next two volumes already released!

Season 8 is pretty decent in itself, but much of the series has lost its comedic spark and turned more serious. I don't know if FG will regain its hilariousness (the original writing staff before the long cancellation period was genus), but I do know that American Dad seems to have gotten the better writers (as per commentary/comic-con appearances by Seth, the writers of the two shows are separate and rarely interact...

Not too bad but just not what it used to be
Family Guy Volume 9 contains 14 episodes. The last 11 episodes of season 8 (not including "Something, Something, Something Dark Side") and the first 3 episodes of season 9. The 3 episodes of season 9 on this set are shown in a Widescreen format.

Episode list

Business Guy 2/5 (Last episode of 2009)
Big Man on Hippocampus 4.5/5 (First episode of 2010)
Dial Meg for Murder 3.5/5
Extra Large Medium 4.5/5
Go Stewie Go 3/5
Peter-assment 2/5
Brian Griffin's House of Payne 4.5/5 (Good episode except for the scenes with unconscious Stewie)
April in Quahog 3/5
Brian and Stewie 1.5/5
Quagmire's Dad 2/5
The Splendid Source 4/5 (Cleveland appears in this episode!!)
And Then There Were Fewer 3/5 (Season 9 premeire)
Excellence in Broadcasting 3/5
Welcome Back Carter 3.5/5

The episodes that I would reccomend are "Big Man on Hippocampus", "Extra Large Medium", "Brian Griffin's House of Payne", and "The...

RoboCop Trilogy [Blu-ray]

Even better than that fantastic Criterion edition
I was skeptical about this when I first saw it at the store, as I already owned the fantastic Criterion edition DVD. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the new MGM unrated version found in the Trilogy boxed set is well worth it. So here is a review for people who already own the Criterion disc and are wondering if they should shell out their hard earned cash for this newer DVD.

Here are the differences I found between the new disc and the Criterion one...

PLUSES:
a.. Anamorphic widescreen. The Criterion disc was not anamorphic. As a result, the picture on the MGM disc is a lot less pixellated than the Criterion one. The color is also more saturated.

b.. New sound mix. The Criterion disc was mixed in Dolby surround. The new mix is in Dolby 5.1, and they obviously had fun remixing it. The surrounds are split and very directional. The sound is really an improvement in every way (see (d)).

c.. It's the same unrated cut that was on the Criterion disc.

d.. They...

SAVE your money....same Robocop as previously issued....
so you can buy it for under ten bucks anywhere (and we all know it not only is a bad transfer but has NONE of the great bonus features available on the normal DVDs)..so all you get for your huge investment is a bare bones 2 and 3...

I can't believe I got suckered into buying this but I couldn't imagine them doing this at that price...fool me once...well I'll wait in the future until some other person does the experimenting.

Almost CRITERION, almost...
The one thing that doesn't seem to be getting any fanfare, with the new release of this trilogy from MGM, is the fact that the first movie, is in fact, the UNCUT DIRECTOR's CUT, that was presently, till now, only available on the out of print (and pricey) Criterion version of this DVD.

Oddly enough, even the new trilogy packaging and extras, don't go out of their way to press, what you'd think would be a GREAT selling point, almost as if the decision to use the directors cut, was a last minute thing.

Funny enough, even the commentary (which, unfortunately, is NOT the commentary present on the Criterion disc) was made, with the director and crew, watching the theatrical version of the movie, as they keep referring to this fact, and discussing the deleted scenes, EVEN as we, the viewers, are watching the very scenes that they are saying are missing in this version. It also amazes me, as to how they managed to sync up the commentary to the cut film, over top of the uncut film,...

Archer: The Complete Season One [Blu-ray]

BRILLIANT!
You know, I don't normally put my review titles in all caps. But what can I say? This show is... well, BRILLIANT! I've always thought that there are far, far too many five star reviews here on amazon. But if there ever was a show that genuinely deserved a rave, this is it.

Archer is a wonderfully absurdist frolic for strictly adult audiences. Fundamentally this show is a giant spoof of 1960s spy thrillers; a spoof made for decidedly 21st century sensibilities. It's the show Get Smart would have been had all the characters been perpetually high on crystal meth.

In fact, the characters on Archer are all selfish, petty, and utterly and completely venal: the three great ingredients from which comedy is made. They seem to think and act more like deranged adolescents than grown-ups. Deranged adolescents with access to firearms. Add all this together and you get some idea of the flavor of the show. Archer is very much in the spirit of the original Williams Street adult...

Great show, DVD extras suck
I love Archer, it's one of the funniest shows on TV. I was really excited about getting the DVD because of the "previously unaired pilot" and behind the scenes material. If those are your main reasons for purchasing the DVDs, skip it. The "pilot" is just an episode with Archer replaced with a dinosaur, which is funny for about thirty seconds but goes on for an entire episode. The behind the scenes stuff has some interesting concept art in it, but most of the actual information isn't even narrated - it's printed on the screen in letters too small to be read from across the room on my 48 inch HD TV. I'm still happy with my purchase of the discs because the actual show is so good, but PLEASE Archer people, do better than this on the next release!

Hilarious
Wow, FX has definitely done it again. When I first saw commercials for this show I thought it looked horrible. After watching an episode, I realized the only thing that is horrible is FX's method of advertising. I quickly bought the first season on DVD to catch up on the whole thing in order. It has one of the best pilots I've seen in quite some time. The jokes are extremely crude, vulgar, sexist, racist, etc so if you're easily offended I would definitely stay away from this series. I'm looking forward to buying season 2 as well!

Laugh It Up, Fuzzball: The Family Guy Trilogy (It's a Trap! / Blue Harvest / Something, Something, Something, Darkside) [Blu-ray]

Better than expected!!! Includes Digital Copy and past bonus features
I had already owned the first two movies on DVD. But when i saw this set for only 22.99 here on Amazon on Blu Ray, I thought that the deal was too good too pass up. Based on the Amazon description, I wasn't expecting much. Just the BDs and the Bonus features listed which were for the new film. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised when i got this today! Every film includes a digital copy, something not listed by Amazon in the description. In addition, it looks like all the bonus features from the past releases are still there, something that was also not listed by Amazon when I purchased. All this, 3 great BD titles plus digital copies plus tons of bonus stuff..... all for under 8 dollars per title. Can't beat that. Here is a full rundown of the bonus features listed for each title:

Blue Harvest:

*Audio Commentary from Seth Macfarlane and director, producers, writers, and editors
*A Conversation with George Lucas
*The Making Of Blue Harvest
*Animatic...

Regarding the censor comments
****The movie only is censored if you don't go into the language selection menu and select the uncensored option.****

Great Blu-Ray Transfers except for the DVD-quality Disc 1
First, the bad news... if you are buying this whole TRILOGY package instead of just the newest parody titled "It's a Trap" so you can include the first Star Wars parody in Blu-Ray format, SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!

I really wanted to see SOME KIND OF picture quality improvement like the 2 newer parodies on Blu-Ray. After viewing disc 1, I just have to assume it was a primitive "upconvert" to the Blu-Ray format. There was NO improvement in the sharpness of the drawn lines, colors are standard-def bland, and stair-stepping is evident in the resolution. Of course, disc 1 is still full screen as expected, so "Family Guy: Blue Harvest" gains absolutely nothing on Blu-Ray over the previous DVD version.

Now, the other two discs are very good on Blu-Ray with sharp lines and colors that really pop! Nice transfer, and the Blu-Ray difference in quality is striking even for animated content without complex textures.

All 3 discs are entertaining parodies of the...

Mr. Popper's Penguins

An Absolutely Hilarious Animal-Human Love Tale
You live in an apartment in New York City and work within sight of the Empire State building. Your life is hectic but predictable.

Imagine getting a very unusual gift (turns out, later, to be from your father). It is a live gentoo penguin. Wanting to send it back, you ask for a return crate. You get a new crate all right--filled with five new penguins.

What a mess your apartment soon becomes! You get snipped at and dumped on by the penguins. You give them names, such as Nimrod, Stinky, Captain, etc. They are perpetually playful! The penguins swim in the bathtub and spill water all over. Your children from a terminated marriage come to visit, and, having long been alienated from you, absolutely fall in love with the penguins.

A nosy neighbor wonders what the noises are from your apartment and, suspecting that he is on to something, wants to tell the board about it. Worse yet, your new nemesis, a penguin specialist who works in the zoo, keeps spying on...

Mr. Popper's Penguins is POPPREFFIC!!!
Took my 7 year old daughter to see this movie today & Im really glad we went!
From the previews I thought the movie was going to be boring & lame, but I was pleasantly surprised with the movie!

The movie ran at a fast & very entertaining pace...
The theater audience laughed, laughed & then laughed some more...

The movie has comedy for sure, but also tells a great story & has a few very good life lessons in it...
The lengths Carrey takes to take care of these Penguins is just AWESOME!!!

Jim Carrey did a fantastic job as the lead actor...
He shows signs of his old hillarious humor from his early films, but is not sooooo over the top in this film as he was in past films...
He showed true heart & was very believable in his role!!!

The Penguins were unbelievably funny & simply amazing! They must have had some serious training!
The supporting acting was pefectly done by Mr. Poppers kids & ex wife...

Overall...

GREAT FUN.....
Between Mr. Popper's Penguins and The ZooKeeper, ... I liked them both, but I liked Mr. Popper's Penguins more. Kids loved it too. Nice story. Has been while since I saw a Jim Carrey movie,... thought he did a good job in this role. And the penguins are hilarious! I didn't quite get that incredible name of Mr. Popper's assistant,.... with the fun voice and accent, ... miss P (?),... but I liked her character/role too. So many fun scenes in this movie. We had a good time.
